What is Clinical Pilates & who is it for?

What is Clinical Pilates?

Pilates is a mind-body exercise that requires core stability, strength, and flexibility. Paying special attention to muscle control, posture, and breathing rhythm.

It is a form of strength training, but it doesn't look or feel like traditional weightlifting. Pilates focuses more on improving muscle tone and not muscle size, but the result is similar: greater stability and muscular endurance, making movement more efficient.

The repertoire of approximately 50 exercises has been developed to increase muscle strength and tone, particularly of your abdominal muscles, lower back, hips and buttocks – the group of muscles well known as the ‘core’.

Working towards balanced muscular strength on both sides of your body and increased muscular control of your back and limbs translates into improved stabilisation of your spine. An essential goal for those of us that experience neck or back ache.

Each exercise flows from the "five essentials": breath, cervical alignment, rib and scapular stabilisation, pelvic mobility, and utilisation of the transverses abdominal muscle.

Clinical Pilates takes into account any injuries you may have, allowing you to rehabilitate them but more importantly give confidence on how to exercise with injury.

Who would it benefit?

Pilates is not only a rehabilitative form of exercise. It is a great exercise option for low impact core conditioning that complements all other sporting and fitness interests.

Working on mobility, stability and flexibility will only improve muscle health, reduce risk of injury and encourage a better mind-body connection in your movement pathways.
